Employees of the Year

Warsaw Community Schools 2011-2012 Employees of the Year Celebration

In each of their own unique ways and job functions, the District Employees of the Year exemplify the school system’s mission statement, “To inspire and equip all students to continuously acquire and apply knowledge and skills while pursuing their dreams and enriching the lives of others.”

This year’s District Support Employee of the Year, Gloria Reichard, is an instructional assistant at Lakeview Middle School working with English Language Learners. She works well beyond her paid hours to help students whether it is for studying, counseling, encouragement or compassionate love and support. She volunteers to work track meets, chaperones field trips, attends dances and organizes clubs to promote a sense of belonging for students. She has a wonderful optimism and humor that exudes daily. Parents, students and teachers love her!

This year’s District Special Services Employee of the Year, Sarah Garcia, is a school nurse at Lincoln Elementary School. She makes herself available to everyone! She goes to homes, gets involved with medications and behaviors needed for student cooperation and anything needed to set up a child for success in school. She is professional, concerned and dedicated, providing students and adults with compassionate solutions to problems. She is known for “doing whatever it takes to help students be successful during the school day.

This year’s District Teacher of the Year is Nathan Howett, a science teacher at Edgewood Middle School. He is a dedicated teacher who always has the student’s best interest and achievement in mind. He is a teacher of second and third chances! He is creative in his lessons and teaches with hands-on labs to motivate students. A leader in the use of technology, he shares his knowledge with fellow teachers. During this past year, he became a “life-line to the world” for a student as she struggled and lost her battle with leukemia. Many students turned to him as they grieved and learned how much he cared and was hurting with them.

Congratulations to our District Employees of the Year!

Internet Essentials

The Federal Communications Commission and the Comcast Corporation recently announced the launch of a new nationwide program to provide families with children who are eligible to receive free lunches under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) with low-cost Internet service, affordable computers and digital literacy training.

The goal of Internet Essentials is to help close the digital divide and ensure more Americans benefit from all the Internet has to offer. The program addresses what research has identified as three primary barriers to broadband adoption:

1.
       -- A lack of understanding of how the Internet is relevant and useful;
2.
-- The cost of a home computer; and
3.
-- The cost of Internet service.

Program details are available here:

Weather Policy

Every effort is made to get the delay or cancellation information out quickly and accurately to the media. Please see the following document for your school's schedule icon School day schedules.

Warsaw Community Schools uses a detailed and specific procedure to determine when school will be delayed or cancelled.

When a cancellation or delay is considered for weather-related reasons, the transportation director begins evaluating the road situation before 4:45 a.m. The school district is divided into quadrants with bus drivers reporting on conditions in their area before 5:00 a.m.

The transportation director may also request information from the Warsaw Police, Kosciusko County Sheriff, and the Highway Departments. After all the information is compiled, the transportation director then discusses the situation with the superintendent, who makes the final decision. If a delay or cancellation is called, the area television and radio stations are then notified. Normally this procedure is completed before 5:30 a.m.

Parents and other interested people are asked not to call television stations, radio stations, schools, or the transportation department for information during inclement weather.

Delays and announcements are also broadcast on WRSW 107.3, WIOE 98.3, and Willie 103.5.

To register for school delay and closing alerts, visit www.weareclosedtoday.com.   Delays and closings are also posted on the WCS information line at 574-371-5000 and on the website at www.warsaw.k12.in.us.
