Warsaw Community Schools staff banded together Friday, Feb. 1, to provide food for families in need.

Following the adverse winter weather and historic cold temperatures this week, many families have not been able to leave home or work. WCS staff, concerned about local families who may be without food due these hardships, stepped up to help deliver well over 200 Boomerang Backpacks filled with food. Teachers, administrators, nurses and bus drivers delivered these backpacks despite the closure of school to ensure the safety and wellness of our community.

Warsaw Community Schools would like to thank its staff for coming together and working as a team to enrich the lives of others and put the WCS mission statement into action. The WCS mission is “to inspire and equip all students to continuously acquire and apply knowledge and skills while pursuing their dreams and enriching the lives of others.”

If you are in need of food or would like to give to the Boomerang Backpack program, please contact Tracey Akers, head nurse coordinator, at trakers@warsawschools.org

WCS orchestra will be hosting an informational night for parents and sixth grade students interested in joining the orchestra from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the Warsaw High School orchestra room. Guests can enter through door 44 to attend the meeting.

During the event students will be able to try out instruments while parents get more information and learn about instrument rental. Typical instruments used in orchestra include the violin, cello, viola, bass and more.

To sign up, email Heather Brannock at hbrannock@warsawschools.org. Current sixth grade students are advised to select orchestra as their first choice on their selection cards.

Next year’s seventh grade band will be forming soon and Warsaw Community Schools would like to extend an invitation to your child to participate in its exciting music programs!

“I believe everyone is born with musical ability. Now is the time to nurture that ability. Participation in band provides an avenue for creativity and self-expression that adds richness to the quality of life,” states band director Joseph Peloza.

Recent studies have also shown, on average, students who study a musical instrument score higher on standardized tests and out perform their peers in academic courses.

To enroll in band for next year, we invite you and your child to attend instrument fittings on Monday, Feb. 4, at Edgewood Middle School from 4 p.m. to 7:30 pm. During these informal fittings, each child will have a hands-on opportunity to try out any instrument they might be interested in playing. The goal of the evening meeting is to choose the instrument best suited to your child.

We look forward to meeting you at the Band Fitting Night. We anticipate the beginning of another great seventh grade band. Please call 574-371-5037 or email Lori Owens at lowens@warsawschools.org to schedule an instrument fitting appointment for your student.

Due to anticipated historic low temperatures Tuesday afternoon through Thursday of this week, Warsaw Community schools will be closed 1/29, 1/30 and 1/31.  During that time, E-Learning days will be observed.

While temperatures are in an acceptable range on Tuesday morning, significant temperature drops are projected around noon.  There is also considerable worry of salt becoming ineffective with black ice due to the extreme temperatures and wind chills. In an effort to prevent exposure to such conditions for our students, teachers, parents and drivers WCS will be closed during these dates.  Please stay safe and warm!

All Warsaw Community Schools will be closed due to extreme wind chills for Friday, January 25, 2019.  e-Learning Day with assignments posted by 11:00 a.m. and due Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.
