The GED Test offers adults who left school an opportunity to earn a high school credential (diploma). GED examinees must demonstrate major skills (twelfth grade competencies that would have been acquired in a four-year high school education) in a battery of five separate tests, given on Saturday, Tuesday, & Thursday evenings, covering the following major subject areas:

Saturday - 8:00 a.m. to Noon

Orientation - approximately 60 minutes
Mathematics - Part I - 45 minutes for 25 items (with calculator)
Part II - 45 minutes for 25 items (without calculator)

The mathematics test measures problem-solving skills in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data, statistics, and probability. The focus is on the ability to solve problems in realistic contexts. Item sets on the test may involve analyzing multiple pieces of information: charts, graphs, and tables. This includes numbers, number sense and operations 25%; Data, statistics & probability 25%; Algebra, functions and patterns 25%; and approximately 50% of the problems will involve graphics.

Science: 80 minutes / 50 items
The science test measures the ability to comprehend and use information in the areas of life sciences, the physical sciences, also earth and space science. This includes Life Science (Biology/Health) 45%; Earth & Space 20%; and Physical Science (Chemistry & Physics) 35%.

Tuesday - 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Social Studies: 70 minutes / 50 items
The social studies test measures the ability to comprehend and use information in the areas of history, economics, civics, government, geography, and world history. The focus of this test is assessing the examinee's ability to use concepts and information to solve problems or answer problems. This includes History (National 25% & World 15%) 40%; Geography 15%; Civics and Government 25%; and Economics 20% -- Visual Text (Cartoons, photos, timelines, graphs, charts, diagrams, figures, & maps) 60% and Written Text 40%.

Language Arts / Reading: 65 minutes / 40 items
This test measures the examinee's ability to comprehend and answer questions about literary selections from popular literature and nonfiction reading, such as business documents. This includes 75% of the test being fiction and 25% non-fiction reading. One of the fiction passages will include at least one comparison/ contrast question. One of the non-fiction passages will be a business-related document, such as an excerpt from an employee handbook or training manual.

Thursday - 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Language Arts / Writing: 120 minutes / 50 items, plus an essay to write
This test is in two parts. Part I (75 minutes) is a multiple-choice test of the ability to edit and correct problems in sentence structure, usage, mechanics, and organization. This includes Organization 15%; Sentence Structure 30%; Usage 30%; Mechanics (Homonyms, Punctuation and Capitalization) 25%. Part II (45 minutes) is an essay question to respond in writing. The essay question presents an issue or situation with which examinees are familiar.

Am I eligible to take the GED Test?

If you meet all of the following qualifications, you may take the test:

• You are at least 17 years of age. (Only 17 year-olds must provide the Indiana Exit Interview form showing withdrawal from school and passing GED practice test scores.)
• You will be required to provide 3 items of identification for copying (1 item must be a picture identification; the other identifications include two of the following: your social security card, marriage certificate, passport, Indiana car registration, birth certificate, credit card, current pay stub, current phone bill or utility bill) at the time you register for taking the test. You will be asked to complete an application and the identification copies will be attached to your completed application.
• You have lived in Indiana a minimum of 30 days immediately preceding the testing.
• You have NOT earned a high school diploma from an accredited United States high school.
• At each testing session, you will be asked to again provide the same photo identification used at registration.

• A $70 testing fee will be required to be paid at the time of registration. This is non-refundable. If you fail to show up to take the test, an additional $70 will be required to re-schedule for another month.
  

How may I prepare to take the test?

The Warsaw Alternative Learning Center (371-5019 ext. 4010 or 4011) provides instruction to assist in studying for the GED test. You may wish to prepare on your own. There are self-study books for GED available in bookstores and libraries. These books are usually titled something like, How to Prepare for the High School Equivalency Exam. Also, GED instruction is offered on TV. PBS broadcasts test preparation lessons. For more information, please call toll free, 1-877-GEDONTV or 1-877-433-6688. At www.gedtest.org internet site, a "Prospective GED test takers" section gives you an opportunity to see possible examples of questions along with the answers to assist in your preparation for the test.

How long do I have to complete the testing? What scores do I need to pass?

The testing of all five sections of the GED test will take more than seven hours. You may take as long as 5 weeks to finish all five sections of the test. All tests must be completed within 35 days after you take the first test. Please be reminded that the Warsaw test site only offers testing once a month. To pass the GED, you must score at least 410 points on each one of the five tests out of a possible 800 points and have at least 2250 total points to average 450 for the whole test.

What do I need to bring?

• You may wish to bring a #2 pencil and a black or blue ink pen. Pencils and pens will be provided at the test.
• There is a limited number of candidates who can test for the GED at a time (15). Therefore, the test is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Should there already be 15 people signed up for the next monthly test, the GED candidate will need to sign-up for the next month testing.
• It is possible for 1 test per month to be taken in Spanish. At the time of registration, the candidate will need to indicate that he/she wishes to take the test in Spanish.

When I pass, do I receive a regular high school diploma?

No. You will receive a General Educational Development diploma from the Indiana Department of Public Instruction, signed by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

What if I do not pass the test the first time?

You may retest many times as needed to pass. Please call the administration buidling (371-5098) for retest times and costs.
